I am simultaneously elated and wary of the praise Obama is getting from the Republicans over his cabinet selections and his policy statements since his election. While the comments from various Republican politicians and commentators have been given with some reservations, overall, Obama seems to be getting positive reviews.
In the spirit of the season, I will attribute these statements to a thaw in the adversarial relationship the two parties have been engaged in for so many years. It could also be that even the die-hard ideologues have realized that the country is on the brink of financial disaster and need to rein in their normal partisan invective. (Ann Coulter being the singular exception, naturally. But we can hope they never unwire her jaw. And maybe we could do something about her fingers. But I digress.) And maybe everyone is just tired of the constant fighting and one-upmanship that has been the m.o. of our politics since forever.
Obama began his quest for the presidency with the audacity of hope. Perhaps it is viral and will infect all of us.
